Azolla is an unsual fern, since it is both aquatic and a nitrogen fixing endophytic in nature. The leaves are clustered on a root-bearing rhizome. IIt thrives in a nitrogen-poor environments due to the presence of symbiotic cyanobacteria and other bacteria in special cavities within the leaves.
