Scirpus australis
Scientific Name - Scirpus australis
Common Name - Club-rush
Scirpus australis grows up to 3.5 metres (11 ft) tall in fresh water. The inflorescence appears at the top of the stem and the flowers are in the form of spikelets. This plant is native to India and has water cleaning properties. It helps in the removal of TSS, NH4-N, NO3-N, Total Phosphorus, Fecal Coliforms and reduction of Biochemical Oxygen Demand in polluted water bodies and water treatment systems. This species is a perennial rhizomatous sedge commonly found growing in ponds, ditches, rivers, marshes, lakes and banks of canals of shallow water. It also occurs in stagnant or weakly running water, sometimes alternatively fresh and salted water. It forms great reed marsh on temporary unflooded soils.
